High School Junior Andrea Shyu did not even know who the mayor of Fremont was before signing up to volunteer for his re-election campaign. Now, the 16-year-old spends up to eight hours a week canvassing door-to-door and putting up lawn signs.
Shyu is one of 130 students Mayor Bob Wasserman’s campaign recruited from high school classrooms and at school activities fairs. Fremont’s large American-Muslim population was united behind Democratic candidate Barack Obama for the presidential election. 
Muslim voters said they were backing Obama largely because they thought he would do a better job than Republican rival John McCain in tackling the country’s economic problems.
But they also felt President Obama would be better for their countries of origin, such as Pakistan and Afghanistan, and the international community in general.

With little fanfare and no opposition, the Fremont City Council approved a $3 million loan for a once-controversial affordable housing project in Irvington. The loan will allow non-profit developer Allied Housing to purchase a 1.6-acre vacant site to build Main Street Village, with 55 to 63 affordable housing apartments and six to eight ground-floor commercial spaces.
